3D Works
Via discrete objects and series that explore transformation, I create sculptural works that push against the limits of what is possible or expected. Each work explores facets of trauma in dramatically different ways, but is united by a tactile sensibility and a commitment to transformation as the only predictable outcome of human experience.
Of Precarity and Release, 2022
An interactive floor sculpture that utilizes pressure and presence to explore power dynamics, connection, and the release that comes from vulnerability in connection.
In Time, 2022
In Time explores the process of healing from trauma, and the permanent transformation left behind once that process begins. Layers of broken safety glass are frozen within sheets of ice and stacked onto a steel platform, where they melt over a steel sheet. The thaw allows for the release of contained breakage onto the foundation and out into the surroundings, where it rests in a slowly evaporating pool of water. Over time the water evaporates and the shattered glass may be swept away, but the foundational steel upon which the process took place will forever carry its traces.
If You Read This, 2022
If You Read This explores the power of generous, public vulnerability to create connections amongst strangers. A fragile glass message is submerged within a large, water-filled moveable vessel, complicating its legibility from a distance. Distortion prohibits casual self-revelation, requiring the curious viewer to risk effort-based, intimacy with the precarious. If, during such intentional engagement, the vessel is moved by direct human contact, its watery contents will spill outward onto the steel foundation. The resulting rust-based patterns reward the participant with a visible record of their fully realized connection with both the object and its maker.
Whole Cloth, 2020
Whole Cloth is a series of glass works and an accompanying poem that explore accumulative trauma via increasingly complex kilnformed compositions fired in controlled, identical sequence.
Freeze, 2020
Freeze is a series of kilnformed glass sculptures and an accompanying poem that explores transformation via repetitive trauma. Identically composed structures in increasingly vibrant colors are fired in a controlled sequence, with each object heated to the melting point one more time than the last.
Remnants, 2020
Remnants is a singular kilnformed glass sculpture that explores the accumulation of trauma. The sculpture is heated to the point of transformation with the addition of each layer, allowing the accumulation of melting instances to be witnessed in each layer that composes the final form.
